A huge part of her influence is due to her decision to syndicate her talk show which gave her a global platform. The platform allowed her to expand her philanthropic efforts, which have made a huge impact on countless lives.

Throughout her career, Oprah has done everything in her power to amplify the voices of marginalized communities. As part of her show, guest speakers discussed discrimination and oppression and used her influence to bring attention to critical social issues.

A brief history of Oprah Winfrey’s childhood and early career

Oprah founded of the Oprah Winfrey Foundation in 1987. The Foundation’s mission is to “empower women and children around the world for a better future, with special emphasis on education, health, and social justice.”

The foundation strives to improve the quality of life for both individuals and communities through the provision of resources, support, and opportunities for personal and collective development. Through partnerships and collaborations, the Oprah Winfrey Foundation seeks to make an impact on the world and inspire others to do the same.

As a result of her personal involvement in many charitable initiatives, she has donated more than a billion dollars to a variety of causes and organizations.

Oprah provided $13 million dollars for pandemic relief directly to the cities that she grew up in during her formative years. These include Kosciusko, Baltimore, Nashville, Milwaukee, and Chicago. Her philanthropy work here includes a $2 million donation for food relief to 10,000 local households.

Recognizing the importance of preserving history Oprah donated over 20 million dollars to the Smithsonian’s Museum of African American History and Culture. Oprah is a  cultural change makers  making impact on the world.

Winfrey, who gave $500,000 to Newark’s West Side High School which promotes Pathways to College. The impact of her donation has included publishing a college-prep guidebook to increase collection enrolment and completion. Oprah’s tea business venture donated and  a portion of the proceeds to support the group’s mission. $5 million gift from the Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation will enable Pathways to grow, expanding its influence.

In 1998, Oprah founded “Oprah’s Angel Network”, an initiative that raised over $80 million dollars used to build over 60 schools globally, and funded the education of over 30,000 students.

In 2010, she donated $30 million dollars to create “The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls” in South Africa. The school provides quality education for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds. A promise she made to Nelson Mandela.

One of Oprah’s most significant contributions is the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. This school has changed the lives of countless girls from less fortunate backgrounds by providing education and leadership training. in 1989, Oprah worked with Morehouse College to develop the Oprah Scholars program, which has helped pay for the education of 400 black men as they pursue careers in banking, law, medicine and many other fields.

In 2019 Winfrey topped her own $12 million donation she made to the Atlanta college 30 years ago. The $25 million donation is the largest endowment in the history of the school. At the end of the Oprah Winfrey show it was confirmed that she had sent over 64,000 young men and women to university. Graduate and professional school. Kudos to Oprah! What a phenomenal impact.

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls

Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for girls is a school project initiated by Oprah in 2002, following a conversation she had with Nelson Mandela (South African President) in 2000. Founded in 2007, the school graduated its first class of 72 girls in 2011.

After a 7-year journey and a substantial investment (40 million dollars), the academy/boarding school in Henley-on-Klip, South Africa, was built with a 52-acre campus, a modern computer lab, wellness facilities, an extensive library, and a fireside lounge.

It was a boarding school that transformed the lives of hundreds of students in grades 8-12, equipping them with the educational and emotional skills to pursue prestigious careers in fields ranging from medicine to the public sector, architecture, and so on.

Oprah’s Angel Network

Aside from her many philanthropic activities, Winfrey founded Oprah’s Angel Network, a charity that supports charitable projects worldwide. Oprah founded this charitable organization in 1998 to help those in need.

Oprah’s Angel Network actively supports organizations around the world working to improve access to education, protect basic rights, build supportive communities, and prepare the next generation of leaders.

Angel Network focuses on 4 program areas:
