Impact of Duchess of Sussex Meghan on US Elections

Meghan Markle Advocate for Women in Politics and Leadership

Democracy requires participation from citizens. People need to have a say in  how they are governed. Before marrying into the British royal family Meghan Markle was UN Advocate for Women in Political leadership. She worked hard to promote more female leaders in politics and leadership. Moving back to the US; Meghan now Duchess of Sussex went back to work, promoting participation in democracy.

When Meghan partnered with When We All Vote, the impact was 300,000 new registered voters. This is the power of influence and the Duchess of Sussex’s influence clearly made an impact.  New voters made a difference in the 2020 US election. More people voted in the 2020 election than any other time in history.

The importance of voting

At this juncture, if we aren’t part of the solution, we are part of the problem. If you aren’t going out there and voting, then you’re complicit. If you’re complacent, you’re complicit.

Be part of the solution

I think we are obviously faced with a lot of problems in our world right now both in the physical world and in the digital world, but we can and must do everything we can to make sure all women have their voices heard.

Representation Matters

I’m so excited to see that kind of representation,” the duchess said at the time. “You know, for me, being biracial growing up, whether it was a doll or a person in office, you need to see someone who looks like you in some capacity. As many of us believe, you can only be what you can see. And in the absence of that, how can you aspire to something greater than what you see in your own world? I think maybe now we’re starting to break through in a different way.

Defending democracy

As a couple, we believe in media freedom and objective, truthful reporting. We regard it as a cornerstone of democracy and in the current state of the world — on every level — we have never needed responsible media more”- Prince Harry

Meghan worked to register voters, she felt compelled to encourage her fellow Americans to   participate in their democracy. America is synonymous with democracy ; as American democracy goes so goes the future of democracy. Voter suppression has been evident in certain states and she has been working to register more voter to counter the anti-democracy structures in America.

Racial justice and fight for racial equity in United States

From my standpoint, it’s not new to see this undercurrent of racism and certainly unconscious bias, but I think to see the changes that are being made right now is really — it’s something I look forward to being a part of. And being part of using my voice in a way that I haven’t been able to of late. So, yeah, it’s good to be home.
