Sussex Leadership & Impact during COVID-19 Crisis

Meghan and Harry are leaders. They are global influencers who use their platform to make global impact. In the face of COVID-19 they rose to the occasion offering hope and resources in the face of the global fight. Having been a combat warrior Prince Harry understands how tough it is to be on the front lines of battle. This time the enemy is COVID-19.

The Sussexes came along and were embraced by people who believe that the British monarchy should be relevant in the 21st century. The ‘Sussex Squad’ believe that the monarchy should reflect the Commonwealth and embrace diversity, inclusivity,as well as impact people’s lives. Rather than just be about tiaras and photo-ops, but about impact. Such as high engagement with huge crowds and great support for their causes.

Meghan and Harry’s Instagram account ‘sussexroyal’ highlighted Clap for NHS workers on their Instagram stories. The Queen (‘theroyalfamily’) and KP (‘kensingtonroyal’) and Prince Charles (‘clarencehouse) then followed their lead. Which them resulted in gratitude from NHS workers fighting COVID-19 saving lives.

So many people at home wanted to know how they could help healthcare workers and the Sussexes showed them how. While other royals made statements about being ready to serve, the Sussexes acted  and showed their followers how they could make a difference. Sussex posts focused on the workers compared to other who made it about themselves.

Collaboration in digital neighbourhoods

The Sussexes amplified the message to support the NHS using their social media platform Instagram to their 10.3 million followers. The message went global reinforcing the idea of acting local and thinking global. They were able to use their global platform to promote causes that may be considered non-traditional. Causes such as mental health and mental wellness among service men and women or women’s empowerment. Therefore, offering inspiring stories of how so how people around the world are connecting and coping. Offering hope in the midst of uncertainty.

Mental Health and Wellness

They offered resources that can help with mental health and wellness such as: @crisistextline @giveusashoutinsta @kidshelpphone and CTL Ireland . While, also encouraging volunteers to assist these organizations at a time when resources are stretched and many are feeling vulnerable.

The times are uncertain and people are anxious and feeling isolated. People at this time are looking for community and connection in the age of social distancing.
